What does a Malayalam Jathakam contain?
The starting point is a chart calculated for the date, time and place of birth. The report then organises the planetary positions and traditional interpretations into sections. These serve different purposes: a table records a position, while a paragraph explains how that position is interpreted within the chosen astrological method.

This order matters. Reading the interpretation before checking the input details can make a simple typing error much harder to notice. Start with the first table, then the chart summary, and only then move into the longer sections.
Rasi, Navamsa and planetary degrees
A South Indian chart keeps the zodiac signs in fixed positions. The planets and Lagna are placed in the appropriate sign boxes. Once you recognise the arrangement, it becomes easier to compare two reports even when the colours, abbreviations or page layout differ.
The Navamsa is a divisional chart derived from the planetary longitudes. It is not another person’s horoscope or a chart for a later birthday. Keep its heading visible when comparing it with the Rasi chart; a planet appearing in a different sign in Navamsa does not mean the birth record has changed.
Degrees provide more detail than the sign name alone. They are part of the calculation underlying features such as divisions and planetary periods. You do not need to memorise every number to use a report, but keeping the tables alongside the explanations makes a discussion with your Acharyan more useful.
Which birth details should you enter?
Enter the time recorded at the birthplace. For someone born in Dubai and now living in Kochi, that means the Dubai birth time and Dubai birthplace. For someone born in Kerala and now living in Australia, the birthplace remains in Kerala. Do not substitute the present home address for the birth location.

How should you read dasha and Gochara together?
The dasha section describes a sequence of planetary periods associated with the natal chart. Gochara looks at changing planetary positions during a stated forecast period. They answer different questions, so one should not be treated as a replacement for the other.
