A dasha table is easier to use when you read it as a hierarchy. A longer major period contains shorter subperiods. The planet named at the top of one section and the planet named on a row beneath it can both be relevant to the same selected date.
The first task is to find the correct interval. Explaining its traditional significance is a separate step, and a date boundary alone does not promise that a particular event will happen.
Mahadasha and Bhukti belong together
Mahadasha is the major period. Bhukti, also called Antardasha or Apahara in different usages, is a subperiod within it. When making a note for a consultation, record both names rather than copying only the first planet visible in the table.
For example, a hypothetical row may identify one planet as the Mahadasha lord and another as the Bhukti lord. Read that pair alongside its dates. Do not interpret the two names as competing answers to the question “Which period is running?”
Why the first period may be incomplete
In OlaMatch’s Vimshottari calculation, the birth balance is based on the part of the Moon’s birth nakshatra still remaining. A person therefore generally begins life within a period already in progress under this model. The remaining balance is not necessarily the planet’s full standard period.
The subperiods are calculated within the full major period, including its portion before birth. Dividing only the remaining birth balance into a fresh sequence can produce different dates. This is one reason to compare the stated method before assuming a table is mistaken.
Follow a selected date in three steps
- Find the Mahadasha interval containing the date.
- Within that major period, find the Bhukti interval containing it.
- Note the end of the Bhukti and, separately, the end of the Mahadasha.
A Bhukti ending is not automatically a Mahadasha ending. Keeping those two dates separate prevents a common misunderstanding when discussing a change of period.

Check what “current” means
A saved PDF is a document produced for a particular reference date; it does not update itself every morning. If a report says “current period”, check the as-of date before using that phrase months later. Keep the original report and the date of your new question together when consulting an astrologer.
For a transition occurring within a day, a calendar date without a time may be insufficient to identify the exact side of the boundary. OlaMatch’s calculation treats an interval as including its start and excluding its end. Rounded date labels should not be read as evidence that two periods overlap.
Why software dates can differ
Check the recorded birth details, Moon position, ayanamsa, year-length convention, time zone and rounding. A table using a different convention may not reproduce the same boundary dates. Ask the practitioner which settings they use and compare the calculation before comparing interpretation.
Birth-time uncertainty should also remain visible. A detailed table can display seconds even when the input is only an estimate. Precision in the output format does not remove uncertainty in the source record.
Use the table to prepare better questions
Rather than asking for a guaranteed outcome on the next boundary, ask which chart factors inform the reading and what remains uncertain. Write down the practical decision you are considering, the period pair and the reference date. The table then becomes a useful consultation reference instead of a list of dates to worry about.
