Text: Valmiki Ramayana
Episodes: Bharata at Nandigrama; Hanuman before speaking to Sita

A familiar epic can become more useful when we slow down at a particular decision. Instead of extracting a slogan from the whole Ramayana, consider two moments: someone holds authority on another’s behalf, and someone prepares to speak to a frightened listener.

Bharata: responsibility without claiming ownership

In the Ayodhya Kanda, Bharata receives Rama’s sandals and places them at the centre of his stewardship at Nandigrama. They represent the authority he acknowledges while carrying out his responsibilities.

One practical reading is that responsibility and possession are different. Looking after a family property, managing a community fund or leading a team temporarily does not make every decision a private entitlement. Keep records, explain choices, and remember the people whose interests you are holding in trust.

This does not mean avoiding decisions until someone else returns. Stewardship requires action. The useful question is: could I explain what I did, and why, to the person or community who entrusted this to me?

Hanuman: good intentions still need careful words

Before approaching Sita, Hanuman considers how his speech might be received. A form of speech that sounds learned could instead arouse suspicion. He thinks about her situation before choosing how to communicate.

The lesson is more specific than “speak kindly.” A distressed person may need a clear introduction, a small piece of reassuring information and time to respond. A long explanation delivered too quickly may increase confusion even when it is accurate.

In an ordinary disagreement, try explaining your purpose before giving advice. Ask what the other person has understood. Avoid using technical language merely to establish authority. Listening includes noticing what might make your words difficult to trust.

Bringing the stories into daily life

These are modern reflections on selected episodes, not literal translations of verses or a claim that the epic has only one meaning. They can begin a family conversation: What have we been trusted to care for? When did someone’s patient explanation help us feel safe enough to listen?

The value lies in a small change that can be practised: clearer accounts, a more thoughtful introduction, or a conversation in which the listener’s circumstances shape the speaker’s words.
